Sunday (16th May) saw the H&DFL League Cup Final played out between Marquis Sports and Parndon Royals at BSFC in front of 250 fans.
This was definitely a game of 2 halves as Parndon Royals dominated the first half, Parndon’s first effort on goal was in the 9th min when Wes Pullen dragged a shot just wide of the Marquis goal, in the 12 min of the game a Gavin Cockman free kick was safely caught by James May and May’s distribution found Chris Bullock who sent Greg Hughes into the box and Hughes turned his marker and fired home from 10 yards to give Parndon a 1-0 lead. On 16 mins, the lively Wes Pullen found himself with space for another shot but unfortunately watched his shot go just over the bar, only a minute later and after a lovely cross by Ricky Goldblatt, Chris Bullock could only watch his header go over the bar, 19 mins and Dan Harvey’s free kick from 20 yds went inches wide of the post, in the 21st min Nathan Bethall was adjudged by referee Rackley to have brought down Ricky Goldblatt in the area and pointed to the spot, the Marquis players were saying it was outside the box and after consulting with his Assistant Jane Johnson, Mr Rackley pointed to the spot and awarded the penalty, up stepped Parndon’s Captain Richard Goodchild who sent Paddy O’Brien the wrong way and slotted home into the bottom left corner to make it 2-0 to Parndon. In the 34th min Wes Pullen’s 30 yard free kick went inches wide as Parndon continued to dominate, in the 36th min Marquis proved they were not just there to make up the numbers when a great ball in by Gavin Cockman found Captain Jimmy Cochrane with space to knock the ball back to Nathan Blake who fired past May to make it 2-1 and give Marquis the boost they needed, just before half time a Nathan Bethall free kick skimmed the upright and out for a goal kick. Half time Marquis Sports 1 Parndon Royals 2.
The second half saw Parndon start off well, with Chris Bullock finding himself in a great position but spurned the chance by putting the ball wide of the post, on 55 mins Nathan Bethall’s dangerous free kick was cleared well by the Parndon Defence, in the 60th min a Gavin Cockman free kick from 25 yards could only find the motorway but 10 mins later a great ball in from Cockman saw James Thomas get on the end of it and with a great header beats James May to bring Marquis level 2-2, in the 73rd min Parndon had a goal disallowed when Hughes was adjudged to be offside, the final action of normal time saw another Wes Pullen free kick go agonisingly wide for Parndon. Full time Marquis 2 Parndon 2
Another cup final went to extra time and only a minute in and after a great ball in from Cockman, James Thomas saw his header go inches wide, in the 95th minute Parndon were awarded another penalty and Richard Goodchild stepped up for his second spot kick of the game, this time Paddy O’Brien makes a brilliant save and holds onto the ball to keep Marquis in the game but this was to no avail as only 5 mins later Ricky Goldblatt finds himself inside the box with room and fires a shot past the very impressive O’Brien who could do nothing to stop such a fierce shot, in the 102nd minute Marquis thought they were level but Jimmy Cochrane’s shot from 6 yds sailed over the bar. The second half of extra time saw some great saves by Paddy O’Brien to keep the score down. In the 107th min a Marquis corner was nodded inches wide by James Thomas, 10 mins later a free kick for Parndon taken by Ross Tobolewski was saved brilliantly by O’Brien.
